Figure 1 provides a short movie showing the process.

The details, if you want ’em

The old way

Picture this — you’re looking at a page on your website at, let’s say, http://www.yoursite.com/about/ourmission when you see a spelling mistake that you want to fix. You need to log in to fix it, so you…

  1. Leave the page you were looking at & head over to http://www.yoursite.com/login.
  2. Enter your user name and password so you’re logged in; however, you’re on your home page, not the page with the error.
  3. Navigate back to where you started a few moments ago, at http://www.yoursite.com/about/ourmission.
  4. Click Edit Page and finally change that spelling mistake.

That’s way too much work! There’s got to be a better way!

A better way

WebSanity wrote a small bookmarklet1 that makes it easy to log in from any Page on your site and then automatically go right back to the Page you were on.

In other words, say you’re on http://www.yoursite.com/about/ourmission when you see a spelling mistake that you want to fix. You need to log in to fix it, so you…

  1. Click on the bookmarklet, which automatically takes you to the login page.
  2. Enter your login info.
  3. You’re automatically taken back to http://www.yoursite.com/about/ourmission but now you’re logged in so you can click Edit Page and fix that spelling boo-boo!

Sound good?

What you need to do

Here’s how to add the login bookmarklet.

Make sure your bookmarks bar is visible in your web browser

The actual name of the bookmarks bar depends upon your web browser:

  • Chrome: Bookmarks Bar

If you don’t see it, do the following:

    • Windows: Wrench > Bookmarks > Show Bookmarks Bar

    • Mac: View > Always Show Bookmarks Bar

  • Firefox: Bookmarks Toolbar

If you don’t see it, do the following:

    • Windows: Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks

    • Mac: View > Toolbars > Bookmarks Toolbar

  • Internet Explorer/Edge: Favorites Bar

If you don’t see it, do the following:

    • Windows: Yellow Star > Favorites Bar

    • Mac: View > Always Show Favorites Bar

  • Safari: Bookmarks Bar

If you don’t see it on your Mac, select View > Show Bookmarks Bar.

Add the bookmarklet to your bookmarks bar

Add the bookmarklet by clicking and dragging the following link to your bookmark bar: CMS Login

TIP: Do not just click on the link; instead, click and hold down your mouse while dragging the link to your bookmarks bar.

Position the CMS Login bookmark where you’d like it to go in your list of bookmarks.

Now when you’re on a Page on your website and you’re not logged in, click on the CMS Login bookmarklet to log in and then be taken back to the Page.

  1. A bookmarklet is a tiny JavaScript program that looks and acts like a web browser bookmark. You can read more info at Wikipedia).
