Bold & Italic

Bold

Make text bold.

Bold the text that you want to stand out, but do so sparingly. Too much bold text is ugly and actually makes it harder for users to see important information.

Example: You must turn in your application by Wednesday, June 10 or you will not be considered.

Keyboard commands

  • Windows: Control-B
  • Mac OS X: Command-B

TIP: Don’t go too wild with the bold text, or your webpages will look unprofessional and will be hard to read. Remember, less is more.

TIP: If you need a header for a section, use the Format menu. Don't just bold the text. Two reasons for that

  1. Styling: If you use the Format menu to insert a Heading & you later think it's too big or too little, one change to the Cascading Style Sheets by WebSanity will fix that throughout the site. If you just use bold, those "fake headers" have to be changed one at a time, everywhere on your site.
  2. Search engines: Google & others recognize and weight real headers, giving more importance to that text than that which is just bolded. This is important!

Italic

Make text italic.

Italicize text that you want to emphasize, but do so sparingly, for the same reasons you should use Bold carefully.

Example: Jumping into the bear cage would be very inadvisable.

Keyboard commands

  • Windows: Control-I
  • Mac OS X: Command-I

TIP: Don’t go too wild with the italic text, or your webpages will look unprofessional and will be hard to read. Remember, less is more.
